SICI Social Media Research

SICI Social Media Research is an academic research project at the College of Business Administration of the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras Campus.  This first-phase of the research consists of an exploratory or pilot text mining analysis of social media posts related to the 2017 hurricanes in Puerto Rico as a vehicle for establishing an automated tool for identifying needs in response to a disaster.

Privacy Policy of SICI Social Media Research

The goal of this Privacy Policy is to inform you about information we gather‚ how we use and share that information‚ and how we safeguard that information. This Privacy Policy applies to information collected from social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Collection of Information

We collect posts from Puerto Rico during the period of September to December of 2017 made on Facebook pages (public) and profiles whose privacy rules allow public access, as well as public posts from Twitter. We will collect comments to posts on pages and general location (town). We do not want or need identifying data. Personal information is information that identifies you or is reasonably linked to you. The personal information we may collect are posts, comments, general location in terms of city, state and country and possibly gender and age group for individuals, category and name of organization for public pages. We do NOT collect identifying personal information such as your name‚ email address‚ mailing address‚ shipping address‚ or phone number.

Use of Your Information

The data we gather is used for academic research on how social media is used by Facebook accounts or Twitter public posts after a disaster.

We hypothesize that social media can help in the important goal of improving communication between those in need of help and those that can provide it in the aftermath of a disaster.

Sharing of information

The information we gather from social media will be analyzed and results will be published in aggregated form (statistics, summaries and conclusions) in academic publications. We do not share the raw information we gather from social media with any other party.

Security of the information

The researchers maintain reasonable and appropriate physical‚ and technical controls to protect the information.
